I was recently asked by friend Whitney Combs to cover the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2014 Man & Woman of the Year. Combs was a candidate for the award, and I was happy to help her campaign. This touching charity event honored the 2014 Boy and Girl of the Year, as well as the men and women of Charlotte’s community who raised the most funds for blood cancer research during their 10-week-long campaign. My good friend, Drew Parham of Audio To Go Entertainment, put me in contact with TIAA-CREF for an upcoming business conference they were hosting at the Embassy Suites in Concord. They were looking for event photography to document their four-day long conference, and had some incredibly fun, photogenic events lined up. I brought in fellow photojournalist Josh Stilwell to be my second set of eyes, and he did an amazing job helping me capture some great, candid moments. Continue reading
After receiving and setting up my Freefly MoVI M5 gimbal, I was itching to try it out on a fun, action-oriented event. Coincidentally, the 3rd Annual NoDa Grand Prix was gearing up that weekend, and I knew this would be the perfect first challenge to test the rig out. It took about an hour to really get a feel for the system, but overall, it was a breeze to handle. The final result definitely proved that the money spent on this stabilization system was well worth it. It added a whole new feel to my shots and proved to be such a useful, lightweight tool.

A friend put me in touch with Charlotte Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, which was looking to have a business headshot done for Dr. Webb, a new member they were bringing onto their team. When scouting around their office, I noticed the perfect background that would compliment the outfit Dr. Webb was wearing, and it had just the right amount of texture to fit in with the theme of their past company headshots. I took a quick test shot using just the ambient lighting so they could see what it would look like.
“That looks great!” Dr. Webb said. “Well, that was easy!”
“That’s just the test shot” I quickly explained.
After telling them that with some lighting, it was going to look even better, I started setting up. A couple of flashes and reflectors later, we got the shot, and I showed her and the team the difference. Although the first photo isn’t bad, adding a couple of lights really adds some depth and contrast to the image. It’s wonderful to see how people react when they finally see and understand what goes into making a nice portrait. Looking forward to working with them in the future to update their business profiles.
Audio To Go Entertainment called on me to put together a fun promotional video for the Lake Norman High School prom they were hosting at the Oasis Shriners Temple. I absolutely love covering prom season for ATG because they seriously know how to put on a show. As soon as I walked into the venue, the light show they had blew me away. This was going to be FUN. Mixed in with great sound, two huge video displays and fog machines, this place felt like a high-class Vegas club. My prom was nothing like this; these kids clearly have no idea how good they have it. Excited to share this video with you.

A good friend put me in contact with Jason, a local improv comedian, who was looking to get some actor headshots taken. We decided to take some photos in uptown Charlotte and had absolutely perfect weather to work with.
Queens University celebrated its annual Scholars Luncheon in the Frances Young Dining Room on April 2, 2014. The Luncheon recognizes the University’s generous donors and provides scholarship recipients an opportunity to offer their thanks in person. As usual, Director of Donor Relations Lizz Clegg and Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Meghan Goddard did a wonderful job putting together and carrying out the event. It was truly a beautiful and memorable afternoon.
As a proud partner of CRVA/Visit Charlotte, I was invited to a sneak peak of the newly built Charlotte Knights BB&T Ballpark in downtown Charlotte. The skyline view from the seats is gorgeous, and I can’t wait to chow down on some hot dogs for the opening game on April 11.
Rich & Bennett’s 14th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl in downtown Charlotte attracted a record 19,000+ participants this year. Was stoked to be part of the event and document the madness.
