Had a blast hanging out with some of my favorite guys from Audio To Go Entertainment to create their updated staff photo. It had poured all afternoon and was looking dismal for the outdoor shots we had in mind, but the rain let up just enough for us to squeeze in this portrait in a kickass alley of downtown Charlotte. The saturated ground made it look even better. Thanks to ATG for staffing such a fun crew and throwing gigs my way!
BusinessWoman of the Year
Had the privilege of covering the 2012 Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year luncheon last Friday. I was filling in for Kristen Hines Baker, who just gave birth to her beautiful baby boy, Wesley! Working with Whitney Combs and Katelyn Lauro at Queens University was wonderful, and they certainly put on a beautiful event. Looking forward to working with Kristen and the University in the future. Here are a few selects from the event:

Expecting
Had a fantastic time photographing the beautiful expecting couple, Kristen and Jarrett. This will be her first baby, so she’s just a roller coaster of anticipation and anxiety. Luckily, she’s got a great support system that will help her learn the ropes. She looks beautiful, and I’m so happy I could provide the two of them with photos of this amazing time in their lives.

Stormy Weather
The warm weather is over in Charlotte. A powerful cold front swept over the East Coast, stretching from Northern Florida to Maine. Heavy winds and rain made for an entertaining afternoon – I sat on the porch and listened to the musical tones of my wind chime as the trees swayed back and forth. Then I took pictures. Naturally.
Light Patterns
I slept in late. Really late. Like, one in the afternoon late. But, in doing this incredibly lazy act, I also became aware of the light patterns bleeding through on my red curtains, which prompted me to take weird pictures of them. Photos are everywhere.
Southern Cal’s Melting Pot
I went there for the first time with friends Thaoly Vu (now Thaoly Roberts! Yay!) and Heather back in July. I was overwhelmed with the beautiful chaos of this place – there were amazing things happening all around me, and so many interesting characters, that I had a really hard time figuring out where I wanted to point the camera. Every race, age, color, status, and personality has melted together here to create a wonderfully unique, harmonious culture.
When I went back to L.A. this past weekend to cover Thaoly’s wedding, I made it my mission to drive back to Venice Beach again.
Below is a collection of photos from both visits. Hope you can see the beauty is this place like I do.
Turtle Race
At Dixie’s Tavern in Uptown Charlotte, turtles are a big deal. Every Monday night, patrons show up to pick their favorite little green reptile as they run for their lives across a carpeted mat. There are even police officers present to make sure things don’t get out of hand.
The way it works is each turtle is placed in the middle of a circular mat. When the box is lifted, the first turtle to completely cross the edge of the circle wins. At Dixie’s, the prize is a $50 bar tab every time your turtle crosses the finish line. We chose turtle No. 2 because of his size and overall ferocity. If he had a name, I’d imagine it’d be Diesel. By the end of the night, Team “Sports Journal” raked in $150 with No. 2. That turtle made us proud.
